As a result, the empirical data on which broader research on bilingualism in Late Antique and Early Islamic Egypt has been based is but partial and, at times, unrepresentative. Moreover, the field of contact linguistics has made remarkable advances in recent years, which are only sporadically represented in research on linguistic borrowing into Coptic. The first international conference on Linguistic Borrowing into Coptic is intended to bring together Copticists and general linguists, especially experts on contact linguistics and typologists. The goal of this meeting is twofold: on one hand, to make linguists aware of a case of extensive and well-attested lexical borrowing in a situation of stable bilingualism, and on the other, to make Copticists aware of current empirical and theoretical research in language contact and borrowing. A further aim is to encourage open discussion about the practical and methodological aspects of developing a database and dictionary of Greek loanwords in Coptic. ----------------------------------------------------------- See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our Space Fund http://linguistlist.org/fund-drive/2010/ There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!
